some bits are messed up though. like in new york if you get caught 1mph over the speed limit twice you have to pay $100/year. that is a blatant tax on motorists. or 45mph limit in one direction but 55mph in the other.. another obvious money maker for the government (the guy in the article was doing 72mph so it is irrelevant in his case)

We dont have this problem in England (yet)
Na na nanana
But... our government seems obsessed with the errection of hundreds of thousends of damn speed camera's.
Even on the motorway now... its shocking... i can understand it outside schools & whatnot.... but on a mortorway... wtf?
I say germany has the right idea.... Autobahns 4TW

Well here in Michigan you can get away with 5mph over the posted speed limit. If it says 70...then you can get away with 75. I go 80...but then again I own a Buick...cops just don't see an Old Dood behind the wheel of those cars.

UK Speed limits (apoligies for Mph... i dont get Kph)
Streets (example outside a school) : 30Mph
Rural roads with no houses nearby: 60Mph
Dual Carragways : 60Mph
Motorways : 70Mph (I aim for 95-100 Mph)

What people do not get is there is a Basic Speed law in most states here in the US. It really boils down a to a Common Sense Speed Law. For example when it is posted 70mph and it is icy out...then use the Basic Speed law and go 50mph.

Here where i live you can normally escape with going 10 over the speed limit. Now i will admit i drive an Oldsmobile(when its working) so cops dont see a speeding car in that, but if you drive a sleek sports car they will get you if you go 10 over. Of course ive had sports cars and small trucks flying past me when i was going 10 over and no cop was there to pull them over. If anything there needs to be more cops in my town out patroling as kids go 75 in a 45 all the time. It annoys me because they are going to school and they are NOT late as i am going to the same place. School isnt going anywhere why speed? Kinda like the kids that run from class to class when we get 5 minute passing periods. Why run? Your class isnt going to go anywhere, it will be there when you get there. There is no need to speed that bad unless you are severly late to something severly important, then maybe but come on people dont be stupid.
Ya accurax when we get snow here and its icy i go 10 under the speed limit but i have people going 15 over the speed limit flying around me on ice. O and some idoit thought that his traction control would keep him on the road so he went his normal speed, and of course he ended up in a ditch. Stupid people shouldnt drive in the winter.

single carriageways with national spped limit sign (white circle black slash) is 60mph
dual carriageways with national speed limit is 70mph
motorways are 70mph in all lanes
built up areas etc are generally signposted.
what really annoys me though is the lack of lane discipline on motorways. people hog the overtaking lanes eventhough the "crawler" lane is empty.
heres a tip: KEEP LEFT UNLESS YOUR OVERTAKING.
and when you have finished overtaking get back in the left hand lane!!

Yeah i aggree. .... i tend to hang around in the middle lane as 100Mph is normally dangerous in the inside lane.
I only venture into the outside lane when i have to though.

considering that motorist caused accidents are the 1# cause of death in america, i think any law that punishes ppl for speeding is a good law.

we have the same problem here in the US, especially in New England. People hang out in the passing lane when they would be just fine in the driving lane. Worst yet are the people who pull out into the passing lane to pass a car but they aren't going at the speed of the passing lane. What makes matters worse is they always seem to pull out right in front of traffic, yet if they wait a minute that traffic will pass and they will have a free lane to pass into. It's like they aren't figuring in the traffic into the equation or they just don't give a crap. I'm betting on the latter

I live in Michigan too, and typically drive 10 over as well, but even around cops you can get away with 5 over. Some things just aren't worth pulling over.

They don't "Give a Crap". They are sooo busy with their cell phone, talking to the other passenger, eating, etc. People pull out while they have their Cruise control on and don't even think about giving it a little more gas to hurry up the pass and get back over. Many times I end up passing them in the driving lane (right lane here in the US) just to leave them behind me. While I am doing that I look over and see them on the phone usually.
My new car on order will have a sunroof....I am thinking about having a hand full of Ball Bearings with me and as soon as I get around these idiots....throw a couple up and out of the sunroof so they land on their hood...that would wake them up. It would be mean! Well, I could at least flip my cigarette out of the sunroof. At night it would make a nice "explosion" on their car....hehe

Another middle-aged dood was telling me that speed limits of 50 - 70 mph were introduced during oil crisis days as trying to drive faster than that in those days with the engines of the time wasted too much fuel. I haven't checked up on that.
